CENSUS OF INDIA 1961 MONOGRAPH SERIES - Volume XIX (Part V-B)

The Banjaras are notified as a Scheduled Caste in Delhi, known nationally by various names like Labanas, Lambadis, or Sugalis. Historically nomadic and often termed "Gypsies," they are commonly called Guar or Guaria in Delhi villages, while urban neighbors often refer to them as Sirkibands (wattle roof makers).

Etymologically, the name "Banjara" likely derives from Sanskrit words for merchant or trader (Vanijyakara). Locally, they explain it as a combination of Ban (jungle) and Jara (wanderer). They claim Rajput Kshatriya descent, citing a nomadic history triggered by the legend of Parshuram.

Socially, they organized into Tandas (settlements) led by a hereditary Naik. The Delhi Banjaras identify as descendants of the wealthy traders Bhupia and Lakhi Banjara, renowned for their honesty and philanthropy. Historically, their reliability made them essential supply agents for imperial forces, including the British and the armies of Sultan Sikandar Lodi as early as 1505 A.D.
